New Year's and Our Own Deserted Island
[21:16] [Monday, January 01, 2007]
Taking into account Igor was leaving in 3 days we decided to start heading south so he could experience all that truly makes Belize such a special place on planet Earth.
We set sail for Caye Caulker 11 miles to the south and rang in the New Year. To all our family and friends we wish you the best in 2007.
In the morning we sailed for Goff's Caye. On the way we detoured to Caye Chapel, an entire island with one exclusive resort. We had heard from another sailor back at Caye Caulker we could possibly refuel there. As we motored up to the fuel dock an employee sped up the fuel pumps in a golf cart proclaiming they did not sell fuel, that it was for their generators and guests. I pretended like we were on fumes and desperately needed fuel. He radioed into "base" to see if they could make an exception. He said they would allow us to refuel for $10 Belizean/gallon, which is $5 US! We declined at that price and immediately left the island for the "rich and famous".
We continued south and arrived at Goff's Caye around 4pm. Along the way we caught a nice sized Jack and decided we would cook dinner ashore on our own deserted isle.
We dinghied to the isle with God in a mesh backpack. It was his first time on land in over 3 weeks. His senses were overwhelmed by his new surroundings and their smells and he constantly had that sort of smiling grimace that all cats do when they are processing strange scents. God truly reigned on this domain. The ghost crabs were no match but their bizarre nature kept God at a safe distance occassionally to track and paw at them.
A full moon rose providing light for us to find enough kindling, coconut shells and wood to cook our fish and veggies. Once fire was started I thought of the movie Castaway and "Look what I have made!!! Fire!!!" but my method was so much easier with a propane torch. We had a wonderful night and everything was almost destined with the fish that we caught (thank you, fish, you were delish), the fire wood that was left behind and the full moon. We left Igor and God to sleep on the island. Igor said he had no idea that places like this really existed still except in Hollywood. We are glad they do and hope they always will.
